Home Theatre -It's not just Hollywood explosions!

Upon setting foot onto our premises many people are surprised to discover we do not demonstrate our Home Theatre systems using the typical blockbuster movies in an obvious attempt to impress. Instead, we will usually use music related DVD's. The reasoning behind this is simple. Given the majority of our own clients, (who have invested in Linn or Arcam standard systems), tend to play their systems most evenings of a working week, their invaluable feedback suggests they are not playing the typical Hollywood movie during their relaxation time. What they are doing, surprise surprise, is playing music and in doing so using the system much more than even they may have anticipated. Whilst it has always been my implicit belief that a genuine high fidelity music will be used far more than most other consumer purchases (even the motor car), the audio industry, or as it's termed now the "home entertainment" industry has, as usual, it's own ideas of what they think is good for consumers.

Home Theatre Projectors

For the home theater enthusiasts a CRT television, Plasma, LCD or rear projection display just will not do. Whilst impressive in their own right, these displays are nothing compared with a high end projector. Once upon a time, a quality high-end projector came only in the form of a box with dimensions to rival any coffee table and looked like it had the capability to launch three miniature surface-to-air-missiles. But like our anti-aircraft technology, projectors have come along way since then. With advancements like LCD and DLP the size of projectors decreased dramatically.

The range of projectors on today's market is simply massive. However, like hi-fi, there is a real separation between quality projectors and mass market. So what are you looking for in a projector?

Because the space between the projector and the projected image is non-enclosed the image is highly susceptible to external light. Due to this there are certain factors one should consider. Firstly you should consider the space in which your projector will be used. Is there going to be uncontrollable natural light? Do you have a dedicated theatre room where turning off lights will not be inconvenient for the rest of the family? What is the distance between the screen and the projector? These questions will help you determine what minimum specifications you require for your projector in terms of Brightness (ANSI Lumens), Colour Ratio and the throwing distance of the lens.

Other factors to consider are, type of screen, lamp life, connections (ie. Component, DVI, VGA etc) and noise. To learn more and make an informed choice about projectors speak to our staff at Jim Tate Stereo. We would be happy to point you in the right direction.
